Paraiba tourmaline is named after the discovery in the Paraiba Hill, Brazil in 1987. Caused by the presence of copper, Paraiba tourmaline appears in a range of hues including greenish blue, bluish green, green, blue, and violet with arresting lustre and vividness. The gem’s striking colour has fascinated many jewellery aficionados.

Since 2001, paraiba tourmalines from African countries appeared on the market and became the new sources of this striking gem. Among theses, Mozambican Paraiba tourmalines have received wide acceptance for their vibrant colour spectrums. The stone is extremely scarce and those over 3 carats are exceptionally rare. Paraiba tourmalines are prone to inclusions and cracks. As a result, large and flawless stone is almost impossible to find, making it highly desirable. Over the past few decades, paraiba tourmalines have had a strong presence in the market. Repeatedly breaking the auction records, it is one of the most sought-after and expensive gemstones in the market.
